Most people think karate for kids is nothing more than two people fighting, in theory, one is defending themselves from the other, who is a bully or an attacker. It’s pretty simple really: Children defend themselves with their heads. It’s knowledge that protects children in today’s world. Knowledge about safety, about what to avoid, about what to do, where to go, and how to stay out of harm’s way.
I’m a part of a remarkable association of martial arts teachers, really forward thinking and action-oriented instructors, who come together almost every day to move worthwhile projects forward. The group is called The One Hundred, and it’s headed by my teacher, mentor and friend, Tom Callos, a 6th degree black belt.
Coach Callos is a critical thinker — that is, he believes self defense represents more than just kicking and punching. Today, my school, and many in our group, are teaching about Diabetes awareness, anger management, environmental self defense, healthy eating, peace education through acts of kindness and project based leadership through community service.

But, our martial art’s curriculum is only limited by our own creativity.
For example, check out a site, that is still a work in progress at www.flavors.me/10Lessons. Check it out. Coach Callos created this wonderful site. This is an example of “Intelligent Curriculum” and something, every member of the 100 is striving for.
And if you know a young person who could use some self-defense instruction, send them our way and get a FREE class. And if you tell us you visited this blog, well, we will throw in a FREE week. Oh, and one thing you will NEVER get at a school in The One Hundred, is a “sales pitch.†We don’t sell over the counter, we sell by engaging in and delivering extraordinary work.
Thank you Coach Callos for teaching us what mastery is all about!
